So I haven’t been blogging much lately! It’s not that I haven’t wanted to – quite the contrary I have so much wanted to. But somehow it has felt that words would not come even as I thought of an idea for a blog post. Plus life has become particularly busy with various new experiences coming my way – perhaps more on that another time. It has also been a time of leaving behind all spiritual experiences I had in the past and finding truth anew in the moment. As sometimes for spiritual journeyers, we can get locked into the experiences and spiritual attachment can arise. So a fresh, in-the-moment is the way to go. Authenticity requires movement not stuckness.
On this journey of what I currently like to call growing in love, I continue to spend whatever free time I can devote to hearing about others’ experiences on the spiritual path. Recently coming across Dr Eben Alexander’s ‘story’ made quite an impression on me.
You can read more about Dr Eben Alexander on Wikipedia here. In a nutshell he is a neurosurgeon who in 2008 had a Near Death Experience (NDE) and since then has written books about his experience including Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife. Just as an aside, when I read this Wikipedia page after having listened to him speak (on YouTube) I was actually surprised (maybe naively) to read about the criticisms leveled against him. However I am not going to focus on these except just to say – form your own opinion by watching the video below of him speaking about his Near Death Experience. Science has a hard time accepting consciousness as independent of the brain – as Dr Alexander emphasizes and so really anything that speaks about heaven is going to get vilified by die-hard closed-minded scientists. Yet ironically, surely, science cannot be seen as truly objective in its conclusions about the nature of life and reality unless the scientific mind is exactly that: open.
Dr Eben Alexander says he went to heaven when in a 7-day coma during which he was in heaven – literally. He witnessed (out of body) God, angels, deceased relatives, butterflies, people in peasant clothes, and he asserts that the current understanding of the mind
“now lies broken at our feet “— for “What happened to me destroyed it, and I intend to spend the rest of my life investigating the true nature of consciousness and making the fact that we are more, much more, than our physical brains as clear as I can, both to my fellow scientists and to people at large.”
I was quite taken with his reassurance and the knowing he exudes. It uplifted me. As he says, there is nothing to fear – you just can’t get it wrong. Interesting that a neurosurgeon who believed consciousness can’t exist outside the brain had such a turnaround. His book went straight to the New York Times bestseller list. People want to know what happens after death! In fact it’s a wonder why some do not! It is a topic I have been fascinated with for decades now – NDEs, life after death, reincarnation.
I hope you find listening to what Dr Alexander has to say as fascinating as I did. En-joy.
